As a petty officer, they go from HM3 to HM1. As they progress in rank, their ratings change. For example, hospitalman apprentice (HA for E-2) and hospitalman (HN for E-3). ![]() The first three Navy ranks (E-1 through E-3) are classified as apprenticeships. They start recruit training as a seaman recruit (E-1). For example, if they will be a Navy corpsman, their rating is HM (hospital corpsman).
